Snapshots from Zürich, Switzerland

With a reputation for being a financial hub, I was expecting Zürich to be a concrete jungle… full of skyscrapers and city workers walking hurriedly in starched suits. However, there was nary a skyscraper in sight (except for that one Prime Tower in the industrial District 5).

Instead, pastel buildings and cobblestone streets flanked Lake Zürich in the Old Town, locals frolicked in Lake Zürich itself and there were tons of quaint boutiques, coffee shops and… chocolatiers, naturally.

First stop, Sternen Grill.

We decided to digest our wursts and kartoffelsalat (potato salad) by Lake Zürich.

Luxemburgerli in hand, we strolled around Old Town…

Gave our glutes a workout by walking up Lindenhof, and was rewarded with panoramic views of the city…

where locals played life-sized chess (and petanque)…

and tourists dipped their hands into water fountains to cool down in the 30C heat.

But the mini-hike up to Lindenhof was merely a warm-up for next day’s trip to Uetliburg. We took the shortest route which promised a “straight road” up, and they weren’t kidding. But hey, once you got to the top, you could see the Alps in the distance, neighbouring regions…

and of course, Zürich city itself.

Zürich’s tram system was clean, modern and most importantly, equipped with AC.  This cute polybahn brings one right up to the ETH…

where we scored bottles of free Innocent juice and walked the hallways where Einstein himself walked some 110 years ago.

Not too far away was the University of Zürich, where Students were mugging for finals.

Another great (free) attraction was the Botanical Garden.

Greenhouses & hanging foliage just make me so happy 🙂

We took some time out to explore Industriequartier – home to the Freitag flagship shop and many other hipster hangouts…

Of course, we couldn’t leave without going to Läderach for some fresh chocolate.

Auf wiedersehen, Zürich!
